I’m so excited to share today’s post with you! My natural hair product staples! I did the “big chop” on Feb. 10, 2010 and never looked back. For those of you that may not know what the “big chop” is, let me explain. When someone goes natural and doesn’t want to wait for the relaxed hair to grow out, they just cut the relaxed portion of hair off. Sometimes this may be a drastic cut depending on how long the hair was to begin with. Alright back to what I was saying. When I initially decided to go natural, I never really thought my hair would grow the way it has. I was expecting maybe shoulder to bra strap length. In almost 6 years I’m happy to say that my hair is waist length (with shrinkage, it’s shoulder length).
I often get questioned about what products I use to grow my long natural hair. I honestly don’t accredit my hair growth to any product. Although there are products that I feel work well with my natural hair. Everyone’s hair reacts differently to products. The outcome depends on the type and condition of your hair.
The products that I’ve been using from the very beginning of my natural hair journey are made by Taliah Waajid, Black Earth products. I’ve used just about all the products in her line, but here are a the products I buy repeatedly. Total Body Black Earth Shampoo. It gives great slip while deeply cleansing my hair. I always get a lot of suds while only using only a small amount, this becomes more important for me as my hair grows. Bottles of shampoo add up, especially if you are having to use almost the whole bottle during one shampoo. You won’t have that problem with Total Body shampoo. The leave in conditioner she makes is one of the best I’ve ever tried. It’s called Protective Mist Bodifier. It comes in a spray bottle so I can easily spray it on my hair after a wash. It leaves my hair feeling soft and moisturized. Aside from the name, I love it. I use her Lock It Up gel as a styling agent when I’m doing a twist-out or just want to slick my hair back into a ponytail. One of the things I love about it, is that it doesn’t give me flakes. I’ve experienced some serious flaking with other brands of gel and there is nothing cute about white flakes all through your do! It gives a nice hold that isn’t crunchy. If I want to do a roller set or bantu knot out, I use her Crinkles & Curls styling lotion. It holds well and gives my hair bounce and shine. I was shocked the first time I used it because I did’t think foam would hold so well and create such a fancy finish. The bottle says styling lotion, but it comes out like foam. It will hold my hairstyle for a few days without having to add more. If you would like to see some of the other products I use on my hair check out the natural hair section of my shop.
